Grew up a block or two away from here. Still stinky.
The south fork of the southern branch of the Chicago River was called “Bubbly Creek” because it carried the run-off from the Stockyards. This photo is from 1905.
Gases caused from the blood and discarded carcasses from the packing plants gave the waterway it’s name. Skimming started when people realized you could gather all the decomposing hair, bone and skin to make lard. Mmmmm.
The waterway remains heavily polluted to this day.

We’re collecting our thoughts here at The A.V. Club, but honestly, it’s hard to say anything that does justice to Adam Yauch’s impact on music and culture. It’s nice, at least, to know that he’s missed, and not just in these music-nerd halls, but in a real way by a lot of people. R.I.P. Adam Yauch.

John Peel’s collection is online today. Well, the ‘A’ section. It’s gonna take a while. But I can’t wait. The best part? See that screengrab? Supported by public funding by Arts Council England. As more and more public arts funding is cut in the UK (and US) it’s a healthy reminder of what funding can provide.
Street artist Mentalgassi uses wheatpaste to turn garbage and recycling bins into big, expressive faces. We love it! These pieces were photographed in Zagreb, Croatia and Katowice, Poland.
